Turnip Rock July 5,t 2014

In area that as known as the ‘Thumb of Michigan” lies a rock formation between the cities of Port Austin and Grindstone, Michigan in an area called Pointe Aux Barques. This area is where Saginaw Bay meets Lake Huron and you will find what is known as “Turnip Rock,” a large turnip-shaped rock-island. The unique shape is the result of thousands of years of erosion by storm waves. The rock has Twenty-foot-high trees and other vegetation which have grown at the top of the isolated rock. Just west of the rock is the “thumbnail” (or “tip of the thumb”) rock, which is the further point north on the "thumb" of Michigan. You really can only get to this area by water because Pointe Aux  Barques is private. The water trail you take from Port Austin is called The Pointe Aux Barques (PAB) trail.  This trail follows along the shallow, mostly undeveloped shore to some of the most majestic rock formations in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. 5 of us, Brother in Law Mike, my brother David, my son Nicholas, nephew Michael Vincent and I took the Kayak trip Saturday July 5, 2014. Here are our pictures of Turnip rock and the thumb nail of the thumb. It is a beautiful trip to take.

The Fearsome five ready to go.

Just enjoying the shoreline

Just beautiful

The Thumbnail of the Thumb

Below just random pictures of our trip.

It was a wonderful day trip total about 3 1/2 hours .
Our pace was just right, the water changed many times from nice and calm to choppy.
We rented kayaks for the day from Port Austin Kayak.
Here is there link. Excellent company.
