The Steps of Lapa

The Steps of Lapa

This crazy and colorful tiled stairway is the work of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, self-taught. The “steps” as I will call them are located between Lapa and Santa Teresa. This is just beautiful. To me each city has something unique made by the people or someone who lives in that city. In Detroit we have The Heidelberg Project in Paris they have the wall of “I love you”. Art brings people together.

There are 215 steps that he entirely covered with majolica collected in urban areas of Rio or donated by visitors from all around the world.

We were told a tile was someplace on the steps representing either Michigan or Detroit but could not find it.  Many were covered by vendors selling items and they would not uncover any tiles, so we searched and searched but could not find theses specific tiles (also some tiles were just missing taken or lost or fell off, that is a shame that those tiles are lost forever). The artist must have liked Alaska, lots of titles on Alaska and also Paris and New Orleans.
Peter did meet him when he was here with his Uncle and Aunt and cousin in  July 2012, he has since passed away.

Enjoy the pictures of the steps and the area of Lapa as we walked to see this beautiful work of art.
